Wooloomooloo: Discovering Fabulous Steak in Hong Kong

Enjoying Chinese food is always on top of my to-do list whenever I go to Hong Kong.  I love eating dimsum and other kinds of street food while going around and doing my Hong Kong food trip.  I always make it a point to discover a new hole-in-the wall whenever I’m there.

During my latest trip, however, I realized that Hong Kong also has a lot of steakhouses, which are immensely popular to both residents and tourists.  Being the steak lover that I am, I just had to get my fill of steak.

Now, there are many articles and food blogs with lists of the best steakhouses in Hong Kong.  I noticed that one place always comes out as a top favorite — Wooloomooloo Steakhouse.

The name of the place itself is very unique, so for me, it’s a name that is pretty easy to remember.  It’s an Australian steakhouse, named after a suburb in Sydney.  The chain has four branches in Kowloon and Hong Kong Island, and we had time to go to the original branch on Wyndham Street in Central, Hong Kong Island.  It’s at the heart of the Lan Kwai Fong area of Hong Kong, which is said to be the premiere dining area or district in the former British colony  (We have been told later that they have another branch on the top floor of a building in Kowloon that gives you a spectacular view of Hong Kong).

Like many establishments in Lan Kwai Fong, it transforms into a bar at night.  You can watch sports events while having steak and your favorite glass–or pitcher– of alcohol.

Hmmm... can you find me in the picture?

If you take the MTR, all you need to do is to go down at the Central Station.  It’s a 10-minute hike.  Yes, it’s a hike because you’ll need to go uphill to get to the place.  But at least, by the time you arrive at the place, you would have earned the right to eat something very caloric!  Hehehe.

I would agree that having high end food in Hong Kong may sound very pricey.  But I was pleasantly surprised to find out how reasonable the price is at the place.  We were there Saturday lunch, and took advantage of the Executive Meal, which was a complete meal for just HK$ 148.  That’s just roughly US$19 or PhP 815.  Steakhouses here in Manila actually charge more.  So if you’re on a  shoestring budget but want to eat something spectacular, this is a good place to go.

You have a choice, actually, to go for less expensive main courses.  But hey, how can one go to a steakhouse and not eat steak, right?

I can return to this place and just have this. It's really delicious. We had this warm bread with 15-degree (C) weather outside, and this was great comfort food.

We started our meal with some carrot loaf, on the house.  They make it themselves.  It’s fragrant, hot and crusty on the outside, and has a very soft bite.  And I love how they pair it with truffled butter.  I didn’t taste any carrot flavor, now that I think about it.  Still, it’s a delight!  I could just eat this and be happy already.  Bread heaven.

Appetizer: We had the Bacon and Baby Spinach Salad.  The dish had pear and gorgonzola cheese.  The ingredients beautifully complemented each other, and the pear made the salad very refreshing to the palate.

The Main Event: Wooloomooloo's Australian Sirloin Steak!

The Main Event: Grilled Australian Sirloin Steak.  I always have my steak medium-well, and they cooked it right.  The steak was flavored very well and was very tender.  It was topped with onion sauce.  I usually have my steak only with steak sauce or red wine sauce, but the mustard provided also gave the steak an extra kick.

For an extra HK$25, I had dessert: Ricotta Cheese Tart topped with Meringue.  The truth is, I’ve tasted better.  Either way, it was a good way to end the meal.

I am very particular about customer service, and you won’t be disappointed with theirs.  We were happy to see that one of their long-time employees is a Filipina named Vicky, who shared with us information about the place, and even gave us more travel tips.  Vicky shared that there had been plans to open a branch in Manila, but negotiations fell flat.  Too bad.  But at least, I have one more excuse to go to Hong Kong every so often.

I give this place a full approval.  Excellent taste.  Excellent service.  Value for money.  Don’t worry about the calories.  You’ll walk it off after eating. 🙂
