Breaking News: Loren Legarda concedes

(Initial Details)

Loren Legarda Has Conceded the Vice Presidency

After presidential aspirant Manny Villar conceded to frontrunner Noynoy Aquino at 11:00 a.m. today, his running mate for the vice presidency, Loren Legarda has conceded.

Legarda has conceded to Makati Mayor Jejomar Binay.  This, even if results are not yet final and the race for the vice presidency is tighter than that of the presidency where Noynoy Aquino enjoys a wide lead.

Legarda has thanked her followers for supporting her in these past campaign season.

Apart from Villar, Gilbert Teodoro, Richard Gordon and JC delos Reyes, have also conceded to Aquino.

This is the second failed attempt of Legarda to win the vice presidency.  She ran in 2004 under Fernando Poe, Jr. but lost to outgoing Vice President Noli De Castro.  She did not concede to De Castro.  Instead, she filed an electoral protest, only to abandon it when she ran for senator in 2007.

Like Villar, Legarda is expected to return to the senate, as her term ends in 2013.  She topped the senate race in 2007, just as she did in 1998.

Prior to running with Villar, Legarda had been expected to run with Sen. Francis “Chiz” Escudero.  Both Legarda and Escudero were party mates at the Nationalist People’s Coalition (NPC).  Escudero was expected to run for president.  He eventually quit the NPC and backed out of the presidential derby.  Legarda, who was left without a partner, teamed up with Villar.  Prior to joining Team Villar, Legarda had supported moves to oust him from the senate presidency.
