I had kept one specific mission in mind even before I went to New York last February: to look for the best New York Cheesecake, if not the world’s best cheesecake.  A comprehensive guidebook on New York recommended it, and so many food critics also give it a two thumbs up.  Some of them would even argue that Junior’s makes the world’s best cheesecake.

Their main branch is all the way in Brooklyn, but I had the fortune of accidentally finding their store very near the Majestic Theater in Manhattan, where Phantom of the Opera is shown.  They have been in the business since 1950.

I tried their Strawberry Cheesecake, and what a memorable experience it was.  I still am not sure if it is really the world’s best cheesecake, but I would rank it with the likes of The Cheesecake Factory (still in the US), as well as local versions prepared by Le Souffle (specifically their Mango Cheesecake) and even Italianni’s.

Fast forward to this morning.  While eating breakfast, my mom very casually offers me “frozen” cheesecake for dessert.  And lo and behold, it was Junior’s Raspberry Swirl Cheesecake, which she had bought at the frozen section at South Supermarket in Alabang.  Being skeptical,  I double checked the label. True enough, it had the same logo and address.  It’s a mini cheesecake, similar to the size of a cupcake, and it’s called “Little Fella”.  Checked it up on the Internet.  And yes, Junior’s does make the Little Fella.

My mom had bought it for around 90 pesos per pack.  But she says there are bigger boxes of it with more servings for around 1,000 pesos.

So forgetting my self-imposed diet, and not minding that it was only breakfast, I dug into it right away.  The taste?  Sinful, as I would say!  Despite its shipment from the US and its refrigeration, it was the real thing — rich, creamy, and dense cheesecake.  My only wish is that they use real raspberry, instead of syrup. Still, this discovery had made my day, and even my whole weekend.  I’d even say it brought back memories of my first visit to New York.

I shall investigate this further and go to South Supermarket later to get more details!  I really hope there would be enough demand for Junior’s for South to import in the long-term.

Masisira diet ko nito!

  1. Juniors definitely has about the best cheesecake we’ve ever tasted, too. So much, in fact, that we have a sweeps going on right in which we are giving away a free Juniors cheesecake.

New York cheesecake is very creamy, unlike some other cheesecake that can be grainy.
